Modernist influence on Music
Igor Stravinsky- Modernist Composer
|
"Modernism" referred to a period of change and development within the artistic field. Similar to Artist of the period, composers felt the necessity of making a break from past conventions in music. They sought to create a new musical language which expresses the mood of the modern age. The developing music was by necessity; experimental, and it proved to be emotionally provocative. Nevertheless, these composers laid the foundation for everything that would follow. Their music created a psychological portrait of the mood of early twentieth century and created what is believed to be some of the greatest music masterpieces of all time.
During the modernist movement the developing music style was criticized and its unconventionality increased public rejection. It was seen as music unfit for events- such as Ballet- due to the sharp expressive music. The Modernist Movement in music was considered a period of diverse reactions, challenging and the reinterpretation of previous categories in music. Modernist composers also formed innovations that led to an alteration of organizing and approaching harmonic, melodic and rhythmic aspects of music. |
Modernist musicians challenged orthodox conventionality in the musical field. Experimenting with composition and sound that generated hostile criticism from the public.
